About Aragats Mountain National Park

Aragats Mountain National Park

Aragats Mountain National Park centers around Mount Aragats, an extinct volcanic massif towering at 4,090 meters (13,420 feet), the highest point in Armenia and the Caucasus region. The park covers an extensive area on the western edge of the Armenian Highlands, featuring diverse terrain that includes alpine meadows, volcanic craters, basaltic lava flows, and rich coniferous forests. Its geography is marked by four summits forming a broad volcanic crater adorned with mountain lakes and glacial formations. The park supports a variety of flora such as tundra alpine plants, wildflowers, and dense forests of fir and pine. Wildlife includes species like Armenian mouflon, bezoar goats, golden eagles, and brown bears. Historically, Mount Aragats has cultural significance and ancient archaeological sites, including medieval fortresses and early Christian monasteries dotting the foothills. Recreation in the park is focused on climbing the various peaks of Aragats, hiking established trails through lush valleys and across volcanic plateaus, and wildlife watching. Tourists also visit the Amberd Fortress and Byurakan Observatory, located near the park. The area’s high altitude and remote location appeal to outdoor enthusiasts seeking rugged mountain experiences in a relatively undeveloped, pristine environment.
